Enabling Climate Action through Carbon Emission Calculations

Recognising the urgent need and increasing demand for sustainability in the logistics sector, we strategically partnered with Climes, India’s leading climate finance company, to develop a comprehensive carbon emissions calculator – A Go Green Dashboard for our clients.

The Challenge:

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, sustainability has emerged as a critical priority. Logistics companies, in particular, face mounting pressure to reduce their carbon footprints due to the sector's significant impact on global emissions. We realised the first step in the journey to net-zero was to calculate the carbon emissions. However, emission calculation was a project with its own set  of unique challenges:

1. Complexity of Measuring Carbon Footprint

We faced significant initial challenges in accurately measuring the carbon footprint, particularly from transportation activities. The diverse fleet, consisting of vehicles with different capacities and configurations, presented a myriad of combinations and use cases. This complexity necessitated a unique tool built by specialists that could account for load capacity and unladen weight, adding layers of intricacy to the emissions calculation process.

2. Readily Available Tools

The logistics industry traditionally lacks user-friendly tools for calculating emissions. This gap meant that we had to work on every aspect of this process from the ground up, including the format of data collection and the final dashboard experience, without any reference models or existing data points to guide us.

3. Ineffective Communication of Emissions Data

Sustainability is a highly complex and jargonised subject. The industry lacked constant, straightforward and easy to decode communication to customers about their emissions. The absence of a simple and effective method to convey this information hindered clients' ability to make informed decisions and take proactive measures.

The Solution:

Addressing these challenges and tackling this project required expertise on carbon accounting and cutting edge technology experience. We decided to partner with subject matter experts - Climes who have a proven track record of working on complicated projects like such. Together we created an innovative carbon emissions calculator, designed to empower businesses with precise, real-time data on their carbon emissions. This tool integrates seamlessly with existing systems, enabling clients to track and analyse emissions from their fleets.

Key Features of the Go Green Dashboard include:

1. Real-Time Insights

Clients gain access to real-time data on their carbon emissions. Accurate and comprehensive data on carbon emissions facilitates businesses to make strategic decisions that align with their sustainability objectives.

2. Comprehensive Monitoring

The tool covers emissions from both owned fleets and third-party vehicles, providing a holistic view of the environmental impact. Granular data per trip and historical data are made easily accessible. This enables our clients to analyse the data and optimise resource usage and operational processes, resulting in cost savings, improved efficiency and subsequently leading to emissions reductions.

3. User-Friendly Dashboard

The calculator built by Climes seamlessly integrated with the Customer dashboard. The intuitive interface ensures ease of use, allowing clients to effortlessly monitor their data as per their discretion. The data is decoded and presented in a simple manner allowing any professional without subject knowledge to understand it. The accessibility of the dashboard supports businesses in creating plans for sustainability and demonstrates their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Next Steps:

1. Neutralising Carbon Emissions with Climes

Our clients can take the next step in their journey to net-zero by purchasing carbon credits from Climes to neutralise their emissions. Climes has worked with over 70 enterprises and enabled avoidance and removal of 3.1 Million Kgs of carbon emissions.

2. Adding more features to the Go Green Dashboard

We want to build more tools to calculate carbon emissions from other mediums of transportation such as market vehicles. This will allow us to have a holistic solution for our clients to plan their sustainability journey.

Conclusion:

Varuna Group’s collaboration with Climes underscores its role as a catalyst for climate action within the logistics industry. By equipping clients with the tools necessary for accurate Carbon emission calculation, Varuna Group not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to broader environmental efforts. This case study exemplifies how innovative partnerships, technological advancements and a shared vision can drive meaningful change, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
